Why Back Up?

We are all increasingly storing more and more important files on our personal computers at home. Priceless photographs, your music collection and school coursework are now some of the things that are stored on your hard drive. How would you feel if you lost your mid-term paper or the snaps of your son's first steps?

Most computer users express concern about losing valuable information, but despite this only 1 in 4 home computer users actually back up these critical. Here are some key facts for your to consider in no particular order.

  1. 3 out of 5 personal computer users have lost an electronic file.
  2. 82% of computers opt to keep a hard copy of electronics files they consider important.
  3. The most common cause of data loss is hardware or system failure.
  4. The second most common cause is human error.
  5. 40% of computer users have been infected by a virus which potentially could impact both your hardware and software.
  6. 31% of PC users have lost all of their files due to events beyond their control.
Theft of your hardware is another factor. In particular if you are a laptop user who frequently travels you also need to consider what happens if your machine is stolen. As you can image there are other factors we have not even touched on.
Time to consider some sort on "insurance" for your data?

Ways to Back Up Your Data
The most inexpensive way to back up your data is using either a floppy disk or more likely a CD or DVD. However opting for this method clearly has some limitations. For example:

  • The disk size would probably mean you need to back your files up over multiple disks. If you store a lot of music or photos you will probably still require multiple DVDs.
  • You need to remember to back up the files frequently or you risk getting out of date.
  • Disks are physical things prone to damage or being lost. Also they can only be in one place at time. What happens when you are travelling and you need to restore your data but the disk is at home?
Obviously backing your files up to disks is better than nothing however there is a better way. Business have long back up data remotely across their networks in storage arrays and now companies are offer a similar solution for us consumers to back up our important files over the internet.
